Forge

Started on a small forge any input from the pro's would be very welcomed.  Made the burners & the pipe entry to to the forge from stainless drops i had.  Planned to line it with some ceramic blanket i have & treat with ITC 100.  For the burners I just machined some bungs to accept miller mig tips .045" seems to work well for me.  Ring welded between the feet is for the propane bottle to set in still need to make a mount to hold it secure.  Thank you for looking & any input or changes that you might think would help me. Reply:I'm not a pro, looks good to me, shop looks better, 6 X 6? looks best!
Reply:Thank you, shop is 40' x 100' love it alot.  6x6 is correct I think my father got it about three years ago, he only hunts for the meat so he never gets anything mounted just hangs them up somewhere.I stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!
Reply:ive never seen burners like that before. is it a two or three burner forge? are those going to be forced air or venturi?  and the itc is wonderful stuff.
Reply:Two burners, both venturi style.  I wanted to be able to replace them if needed so they are a removable assebly.  This is a test fire @ about 15psi, looked good to me but I don't know much (nothing) about this stuff yet. Attached ImagesI stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!
Replyooks great and I really like the stand. What is ITC100? You said its a small forge but in the picture it looks big , what are the dimensions ? Keep us updated on your progress Craig
Reply:rusty ripple glad to here about the ITC 100 I have never used it & had questions about its performance.  Do you know what to use on the bottom of the forge lining maybe a brick or some other material?Steelgrinder ITC 100 is a coating used to gain more performance & protect your refractory inside forges or kilns.  The forge is 22" long, 14" dia. and should be about 40" to center of the inlet after I add my wheels. Have a long week ahead of me working but hope to get back to work on it by the upcoming weekendI stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!

Replyhem that is a good looking forge I like the design.  Was the book of good information to you I may look at getting a copy as well.I stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!
Reply:Yeah, I'm glad I picked it up.  Thorough description of the design and generally well written.  I've ordered quite a few booklets from them.  Another favorite of mine is the one on how to design and built centrifugal blowers: http://www.lindsaybks.com/dgjp/djgbk/found/index.htmlMiller Dynasty 200 DXBuildPro TMA52238 (38" x 22")Miller MP-10 & Jackson Nexgen EQC20 Ton Press & Swag HD Press Brake
Reply:I'm not alowed to mess with this stuff amymore, Doc says... but I like it a lot.  What will you be using for materials? Steel, brass, Al?   Our Jr College has some very similar units which survive for student use in a blacksmithing class.   You can use Natural Gas or even old auto oil well strained and fed to the right size venturi.  There is lots of good info on the net.  You would think it would be dirty/smelly but once fired off the oil burners work fine.   It is an out door activity, I suspect the fumes are not good to breath at all. IF? you get to SW Az I have some old farm implement steel, large harrow hooks etc which is real good steel for blacksmithing.  You can have all U can carry. Looks like fun to me.  Nice work on the piece welding and support looks excellent.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools
Reply:dhem thank you I too will be purchasing some books from them.PapaLion sorry to here about your health & the doc not letting you have fun.  plan to try everything I can with it & learn alot.  May be headed that way in early fall I'll shoot you a PM maybe we could do some lunch & pic some of the steel up that stuff is hard to find in my area not much farming thats for sure.  Well everyone thanks for the comments its bed time for me.  Just started a long week of fourteen hour graveyards,  all i want to do is get home & snugle up to the misses if she will allow.I stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!
Replyooks very nice. One thought. How about a wider, rectangular opening or a bigger dia. circular opening? Just thinking in terms of max'ing it's capability. You know a couple months after it's done something will come along and won't fit. Friend Mike found this and eventually just started using stacked fire bricks. Make the "forge" any size or shape needed. not as efficient, but works for the here and there times he needs it. Nice sturdy nozzle set up you have there as well! 40x100 ! Replyn my most recent forge i used a castable refractory, castolite i think, on the forge floor and kaewool with itc to line the rest of it. i used castolite simply bc i had lying around.so far so good  kiln shelving is often used and is recomended in "gas burners for forges, furnaces and kilns" which is an indispensable resource if your building your own forges. (http://www.amazon.com/Gas-Burners-Fo.../dp/1879535203)   i also used .030 mig tips on my burners and it gets plenty hot.  that may save you some on gas, but if .045 works, go with it.
Reply:rusty ripple thanks for the info i may try to get my hands on some castolite.  I tried the .030 tips but it seemed like i could not get the burner to work, maybe after i get everything built I will try agian.Bert I really thought of leaving the ends open & making a shelf to stack bricks in way to sute my needs.  I am going to build a shelf in the back to stack bricks & close off the port when not needed.I stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!
Reply:Small update, lined & tested the forge.  Not much time to finish it lately, but here is a rail spike i did Attached ImagesI stand behind my welding, I just won't stand under it!
